Michael Van Syckle, Co-Chairman

Mike Van Syckle has been in the restaurant business for 46 years. He has been the owner of Atomic Omelette and Grill for over 7 years. Mike is a huge supporter of local events, especially the Hooks and the Ice Rays. He has been a HELP board member since 2011, and has served as Chairman for most of that time. He currently shares Co-Chairman duties with David Loeb.

Steven King, Co-Chairman

After graduating from Southwest Texas State in 1987, Steven King returned to his home in Corpus Christi. Over the years, he had a long-time presence as the public address announcer for the Corpus Christi IceRays. Currently he remains on air for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi as their play by play announcer for soccer, volleyball, and, most notably, men’s basketball. He has a dual role at the University, taking on the responsibilities of being the Director of Corporate Sales for the Islanders Athletics Department. Finally, after being featured at HELP fundraising events as emcee, he proudly joined the Board of Directors in 2016.

Joe Alley, Member

Joe Alley is a retired Nueces County probation officer. He is married with three grown children and seven grandchildren. He is very active in church activities, including working as point person for CarePortal. His hobbies include surfing. Joe has been a HELP Board member since 2013.

Mike Bergsma, Member

Mike Bergsma owns a geophysical consulting business and is a community activist. Amongst his community activities are Nueces County Republican Chairman, World Affairs Council Board, Corpus Christi Hope House Board, and serving as the Texas Republican Nueces County Chair. He has been on HELP’s Board since 2013.

Rudy Garza, Member

Rudy Garza, Jr. serves as Council Member At-Large on the Corpus Christi City Council. He was first elected to the city council in November of 2012, representing District 5, a position to which he was re-elected twice. In November of 2018, Council Member Garza was elected to one of three at-large seats on the city council. In addition to serving on the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation, Rudy is also the Chairperson of the City Council’s Municipal Court Committee. Rudy has served on the HELP Board since 2012.
